Between the plain and the mountain on the banks of the Segre river
Capital of La Noguera and historic city of the County of Urgell. In its historic center we find charming corners such as Carrer d’Avall, Carrer Major, Carrer del Pont, Plaça del Pou, the old synagogue, the old Reguereta laundry and important historical buildings.
There are still sections of the old wall and remains of the Formós Castle dominating the city together with the church of Santa María and the church of Sant Crist. In Pla d’Almatà we find an important Sarai archaeological site.
The Segre River separates the old quarter and the new part of the city. Touching the stone bridge of Sant Miquel is the convent of Sant Domènec with a Gothic cloister.
Balaguer in the month of November it celebrates the major feast of Sant Crist, with a week full of activities and in the month of July there is the water festival, the Transsegre (tour in handmade boats). At the beginning of June, the medieval festival of the Harpy takes place with stalls of artisan products, street shows, a display of ancient crafts and a historical camp with stagings of life in the Middle Ages.
